Always think "safety first" when jumping into the warm water for a day of snorkeling fun. On Kauai you can find some wonderful protected lagoons that ensure safer conditions and gentler waves than the open seas beyond the rocks that break the currents and crashing waves. Make sure you have the correct gear necessary for diving and especially make sure that everything fits correctly. There are some convenient shops that rent equipment to snorkel enthusiasts and they will gladly help you fit your eyewear and snorkel to ensure that you have a good time out in the water, unhindered by technical difficulties. The friendly staff in the Kauai snorkel shops are looking out for your best interest, and even if you have snorkeled before, it's worth it to pay them a visit before heading out into new territory.
You will be glad you chose Kauai for your first snorkeling trip, with many beaches perfect for beginners and some of the oldest reefs in the whole Island chain. Many species of fish are abundant here, and 1/3 of them can be found nowhere else in the world. So pick up a book at the local snorkel shop or the library before you leave home and try to identify some of the amazing creatures you see underwater...green sea turtles known as "honu" are different from the large and ancient Leatherback turtles who live here as well, can you make the distinction? A great way to engage younger travelers is to make it a contest and see who can identify the most distinct kinds of animals while you snorkel. Combine education and fun and your vacation will be a wonderful family experience.
Scuba Divers visiting Kauai will discover a variety of excellent dive sites along the shoreline. Among these are lava ridges, coral reefs, caves and caverns formed by molten lava meeting the sea, and more! Come to Kauai from May through September and experience some of Hawaii's best scuba diving at the island of Ni'ihau.

Kauai Car Rentals
If Kauai is your vacation destination your only real concern will be deciding which activities to choose, since there are so many opportunities to have fun and you can have access to them are with the right rental car. Although it is not one of the larger Hawaiian Islands, Kauai still has enough space that requires you choose a mode of transportation for your visit there. It might be easiest to decide what you will be doing first and then choose the car rental that is right for you.
You could choose to sign up for guided tours and these often include the rental of jeeps or ATV (all terrain vehicles) for the duration of your tour. Some tours will take your through gorgeous Waimea Canyon, or exciting Kipu Ranch. There have been some major motion pictures filmed here and you will be led through the old filming locations. Catch glimpses of wildlife like peacocks, pheasants, wild pigs and cattle. The views are incredible from the highest peaks on the island and you can experience it all in your special utility vehicle. If you prefer to guide your own personal tours, rent one of these sturdy cars from an agency directly and you can break away from the pack of tourists. Interested in extreme sports? Make sure you choose a spacious vehicle with room for your equipment, like surf boards, scuba gear, tubes or sport fishing tackle. You can even rent a car specifically for your kayaking adventure, with a specially designed roof rack for your kayak.
It is very common for car rental agencies to sell out of vehicles during the peak travel season, so plan ahead of time and find the car you want at prices you can afford. Choosing a vacation time can be an important step in saving money since prices fluctuate based on the seasons and tourist flow. By planning a trip during the off season or a long time in advance you can take advantage of deals and discounts offered by both big companies and small locally-owned businesses.
Things To Do in Kauai
Leave the crowded beaches behind for a day and journey into the lush depths of Kauai's interior, where flowing rivers, deep canyons and verdant forests await you. Some fun and adventurous activities include:
- The highly recommended visit to Waimea Canyon, a half-day bus tour that leads you through the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific". 2,857 feet deep, this amazing natural phenomenon would be easy to miss without this well-guided tour through the backcountry of Kauai.
- A special visit to Lihue Sugar Plantation, a private property only now open to the public, where you can traverse the rushing river in unique style: aboard an inner tube! Formed and carved out by hand in the 1870s, the rocky walls that create the river will pass by as you float down the emerald green waters, taking in the scenery as you go. What better way to experience the beauty of the inner island than upon the water that gives it life? Stop for a picnic lunch at the end of your ride and enjoy a dip in the swimming hole.
- A boating cruise down the Wailua River will take you to the magical and geological wonder that is Fern Grotto. The boat guides will share their extensive knowledge of Hawaiian history and legend while you are serenaded by live music and float along the river in am open-air river boat.
Beaches and Water Activities
- Na Pali Beach offers dramatic views of jagged cliffs along its 15-mile coastline. This state park can be explored by land or sea, walking through the warm sand or sailing along the shore. Overnight camping is an option, so pack your backpacks and spend the day on the beach and the night under the stars. A permit is required for camping overnight.
- Hanalei Bay is a favorite spot for both tourists and locals, loved for its powerful waves and gorgeous white sand. The mountains make a picturesque view in the background while you swim or just sunbathe. Many professional surfers visit Hanalei and you can catch the spectacular sight of champion athletes catching the mighty waves just off the shore. This is not the best beach for snorkeling because of strong currents and shallow waters. The reefs underwater do not support much marine life, so enjoy the views and sun here, but plan your snorkeling trip for another beach.
- In the south you can find excellent snorkeling at Poipu Beach, often ranked in the top 5 beaches in Kauai. When the shores to the north are stormy and rough, you can almost always find calm glassy waters here, perfect for a day of swimming and exploring the world under the waves.
- For a private beach day, try the long and sandy stretch of Kekaha Beach, popular among fishers rather than surfers or sunbathers. Characterized by reddish tinted water, this is not the best snorkeling spot, but is never bustling with tourists like some of the more popular spots. Relax in seclusion, or do some fishing yourself.
- Lydgate Beach Park is ideal for a family day at the beach, and is the perfect spot for beginning snorkelers. The shallow man made pools here make it easy to practice your swimming. A community project supported the construction of a children's playground and bridge here, known as the Kamalani Playground. Grassy lawns are welcoming to young children who might want to fly kites, run and even just lounge.
